KARACHI: Recent spree of target killings continued across Karachi throughout Wednesday brining the death toll to 22 in day-long violence, while Rangers have been given special powers to control law and order in the city.
The incidents of target killing which started late night Tuesday were continued Wednesday as 20 more people were gunned down in the city by unknown armed men. The target killing incidents occurred in Landhi, Korangi, North Nazimabad, Moosa Colony, Abul Hassan Isphahani Road, Model Colony, Orangi Town, Shah Faisal Colony, Saddar, Quaidabad and other areas.
In retaliation, enraged crowds set six vehicles on fire in different localities.
Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has strictly taken the notice of recent violence in the city and ordered provincial government to take immediate measures for maintaining law and order.
In a meeting with law enforcement agencies’ officials late night Wednesday, provincial interior minister Zulfiqar Mirza awarded Rangers with special powers to control law and order in Karachi. Rangers can raid anywhere and detain and interrogate the suspects under the powers.
Security was tightened and heavy deployments of police and Rangers were witnessed in affected areas Thursday morning.
Meanwhile, educational institutions and universities are closed in the city as per announcement by Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah. Papers scheduled for today in various institutions have also been postponed, however, British Council has announced to hold its papers as per announced schedule.
Police say Wednesday’s incidents were of target killings. Police have filed FIRs against unknown persons and started investigations.
